Black Hole Rips a Cosmic ‘Burp’ as It Swallows a Star

Black holes aren't exactly polite eaters. For the first time, scientists observed a black hole both devouring a star and ripping a plasma 'burp' as it consumed its meal — an incredibly rare find. Scientists have previously seen a black hole consume a star, and they've also seen black holes spew superheated matter, but this is the first time they've seen both events occur so closely together. Viewing this particular disappearing act at the center of a nearby galaxy has shed light on a prev

Which Friend of Sid Blumenthal Did Hillary Try to Hook Up with a State Department Job?

Which Friend of Sid Blumenthal Did Hillary Try to Hook Up with a State Department Job?

The State Department just released a new batch of Hillary Clinton’s private emails, so you know what that means: lots of corny, goofball emails asking for articles to be printed out, plus some genuinely interesting items. Like Madame Secretary trying to do an HR favor for some friend of Sid Blumenthal.

In a message dated December 29th, 2009, longtime Clinton booster, sneaky snake, and clingy email contact Sidney Blumenthal asked Hillary Clinton why his friend (name redacted by the State Department) hasn’t gotten a job yet:

Sid also asks, in no uncertain terms, if Clinton can do something about it. That same day, she emails her Chief of Staff Cheryl Mills for answers. A reply from Mills is redacted entirely, prompting a message from Clinton in which she just straight up asks if they can hire this guy:

Which Friend of Sid Blumenthal Did Hillary Try to Hook Up with a State Department Job?

It’s good to have powerful friends! Unfortunately there’s zero indication of who this was all about, and why Blumenthal was vouching for him so hard. If you have any ideas, please let me know.

Almost as interesting is a thread between Clinton and longtime counsel/damage control operator Philippe Reines, who had a PR beef with big literary baby Ayelet Waldman in 2012. Waldman accused Reines of smearing her over a boring article she’d written in Marie Claire:

High beltway drama. But emails from Reines show that he was just as rattled as Waldman, and pretty shitty at his job, which is from preventing even a minor controversy from touching the Secretary of State:

Which Friend of Sid Blumenthal Did Hillary Try to Hook Up with a State Department Job?

It is objectively very funny that Hillary Clinton used to tease Philippe Reines by saying Ayelet Waldman was his “girlfriend.”

Other miscellaneous funny bits include:

Olympic-level kiss-ass Sid Blumenthal sending multiple emails complimenting Hillary Clinton’s glasses

It Takes Very Little Effort To Shut Down a College Campus These Days

It Takes Very Little Effort To Shut Down a College Campus These Days

Today, classes were cancelled and the campus closed at the University of Chicago after an online threat was made against the school’s white students. That threat, it was later revealed, was written in the comments section of the pulpy rap culture website Worldstarhiphop.com.

The threat, which was buried in the comments about a clip of the 1995 movie Panthers, was highly specific, even by Worldstar’s standards. Via the Chicago Tribune:

“This is my only warning. At 10AM Monday morning, I’m going to the campus quad of the University of Chicago. I will be armed with an M-4 carbine and two desert eagles, all fully loaded. I will execute approximately 16 white male students and or staff, which is the same number of time McDonald was killed,” wrote the commenter, who posted with the initials “JRD” and a Chicago Bulls logo, according to the police report. “I will then die killing any number of white policeman in the process. This is not a joke. I am to do my part and rid the world of white devils. I expect you do the same.”

That said, police say the threat—which was brought to the attention of the FBI by a New York resident—“did not appear to be credible.” It instead seems like the doing of a kid who was screwing around. Today, cops arrested a 21-year-old student named Jabari Dean, who prosecutors say lacked the means to carry out the threat.

Mostly this incident drives one point home: Basically anyone willing to risk potential prosecution can grind an entire college campus to a halt with just one click (or tap, if you’re using Yik Yak.)

And to think, it’s not even finals week.

Donald Trump’s Secret Meeting with Black Pastors as Explained by Donald Trump

Earlier today, Donald Trump met with “over a hundred” black pastors in a private meeting after it came out that Trump was (falsely) framing the event as a public endorsement. Even so, Trump still sort of got the press conference he wanted—albeit with only about half a dozen pastors flanking him. And also Omarosa was there.

Unsurprisingly, the meeting sounded deeply uncomfortable for everyone involved. As one pastor explained, “Concerning the issue of the racial slurs and the racial comments that he has made, it was addressed head on. And we are walking way with the feeling that, perhaps, after more conversation, we will be able to echo the tone at the top as a voice to those that are lacking a voice.”

We’re sure you have lots of questions about Trump’s secret black pastor cabal—we certainly do. And who better to answer than the man himself?

To which racial slurs, specifically, was the pastor referring?

These are deep-seated difficulties that certain communities have and we’re going to address them, and certainly if I’m put in a position where I can do something about them, which in this case happens to be president, we’re going to be working very very closely with everybody and we’re going to be solving a lot of problems.

How did you address some of the concerns that were raised?

I’ll think we’ll be addressing them over the coming months and even over the coming years.

Was the fact that it turned into a press conference a complete and total surprise?

We actually didn’t think we were going to be having a press conference. But it was such a good meeting, we thought we would do that, and we had many, many endorsements coming out of the meeting.

Is that a complete and total lie?

[No]

[Ed. Note—Yes.]

Now, how many of these 100 pastors are actually endorsing you?

Some committed. The rest are praying about.

Is Black Lives Matter a real movement?

I don’t want to discuss that. To me, black lives are very important. White lives are very important. All lives are very important.

Where did all the pastors supposedly supporting you go?

There’s a whole group of people behind me. You can’t see them.

What did you see in that room?

I saw love in that room, I see love everywhere I go.

Should you see an ophthalmologist about that?

I see tremendous amounts of love—like right now, I’m getting on a plane and going to Georgia.... I’m literally leaving right now.

[Ed. Note—He was not literally leaving right then.]

Did the meeting run long because of the love?

It went longer because of the love. It didn’t go longer for other reasons. There were unbelievable solutions to problems that we will solve that other people won’t be able to solve.

Why do you think the 9/11 video hasn’t surfaced?

We’ll see what surfaces.

How excited is Omarosa to be there?
